Trying to diagnose and debug a problem for a friend. Dell laptop (Inspiron 1545), Windows 7, using Internet Explorer 8 on her home wireless network. She is able to access most web sites including her home page (www.aol.com). I can also connect it to my home wireless network and display very many web pages.
Attempting to access free public games at www.pogo.com (click on link 'All Free Games' and select 'Poppit' from the list, then click 'Play as a Guest' button). Game initially tries to load, then pogo's Java Problem page is displayed (http://game3.pogo.com/error/java-problem.jsp?site=pogo, 'Java is Not Found or Not Working').
Went to Java home page (www.java.com), clicked 'Free Java Download', got error message 'The installer cannot proceed with the current Internet settings.'
On another computer, went to Java home page and downloaded an offline installation file for Java Version 6 Update 20, copied to friend's computer. File name jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe). This installed successfully. The program list in Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features shows Java(TM) 6 Update 20 listed.
Return to www.pogo.com, select Poppit from the list of All Free Games', hit 'Play as a Guest' button. Game seems to take longer to initialize than before. A taskbar icon for Java appears, with the message 'Java(TM) Platform, Version 6' briefly displayed. After about 30 seconds, the original pogo error page is shown with same message, 'Java Not Installed or Not Working.'
Anyone having problems playing Java games? Asked By: Life4Style. The server connection issue is something totally different though, and should not be caused by Java. Pogo is having alot of glitches lately, and this may have nothing to do with your computer, browser or settings. If not I’ll download v67. Xxx *Bobbi* xxx. Pogo.com includes games like checkers, chess and 'Word Whomp,' but none of those games are playable without Java. Java is a Web environment application that is compatible with all browsers and operating systems. Pogo Games use Java. You need to install Java to play this game.
Returned to www.java.com, and attempted another download/run of the Java install file. Got same error message as before, 'The installer cannot proceed with the current Internet settings. Please visit the following web site for more information: http://java.com/en/download/help' Clicked on that site but no solution was found.
In Internet Explorer 8, Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> All add-ons, five add-ons are listed under Sun Microsystems, Inc. - Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper, Deployment Toolkit, isInstalledClass, Java Plug-In 1.6.0_20 (this is listed twice). All have status 'Enabled'. Under Currently loaded add-ons, only the isInstalledClass, Deployment Toolkit, and Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper are listed.
Computer is probably new enough that a restore to original factory settings would not lose a lot of changes made.
I have reviewed the Java 'Pogo Problems' page at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/pogo.xml, and visited the Java test web page. The test failed with the following error messages (apologize for the length):

I have cleared the Web cache and rebooted - same problem. Also, I have reinstalled Java Runtime Environment according to the procedure listed in http://www.java.com/en/download/help/pogo.xml - same problem is still occurring.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Java (32 bit) -> Java Control Panel -> Advanced -> Default Java for browsers, shows a check mark in a box next to Internet Explorer. Evidently, this check box cannot be unchecked.
There seems to be about 25MB of objects displayed in the Java Cache Viewer. Not sure how to delete them, or whether they should be deleted at all. I left this alone.
Reinstall Pogo Internet Explorer
I will send the same inquiry to Pogo's help desk as well.
